General Information:

Bluefield, Virginia is located in Tazewell County beside the larger city of Bluefield, West Virginia.  Other nearby towns include Tazewell and Richlands, VA along with Princeton, WV.  The local high school is Graham High School.  The 2000 census reported a population of 5,078.  The town's area is a little over eight square miles.  Bluefield is known as Virginia's Tallest Town due to being at the highest elevation of any town in the state.

The town originated around a small post office named "Pin Hook" in the 1860s.  Around 1883, the post office was renamed "Harman" for confederate soldier Colonel E. H. Harman.  In 1884,  surveyor Thomas Graham came to the area to survey the railway. He bought land and laid out streets.  Finally, the area was becoming an actual town.  The post office was renamed, once again, as "Graham" in honor of the surveyor.  In 1924, the town's residents narrowly voted to rename the town to "Bluefield" because of nearby Bluefield, WV.

2000 Census:

The 2000 Census reported the town's population as 5,078.  Although the national ratio for male-to-female is within 2%, Bluefield has a greater number of women (53.7% female to 46.3% men).  In Bluefield, 57.0% of the people (at least 15 years old) are married.  Nationally, the figure is 54.4%.

The media age for Bluefield, Virginia is 44.8 years whereas the national figure is 35.3.

Racially, the city's Caucasian population is much higher than the national average.  Bluefield is 92.3% White while the country is 75.1%.  The Black population is 4.9% locally whereas the national figure is 12.3%.

Bluefield's median household income is far below the national average.  Bluefield's is $32,157 whereas the country's is $41,994.  On the other hand, housing appears to be much more affordable.  The median house is $75,600 in Bluefield while the national average is $119,600.
